The territory of the ancient royal town - which is also called the pearl of the Danube-bend: has been inhabited since the prehistoric age. During the migration period it had different owners. In the Roman times the town protected the borders of the Barbaricum, so it was a strategic locality.

It is an especially characteristic town of the Hungarian history because our state-forming St. King, Stephen was born here. Actually the town always played a very important role in the history of our country later on as well.

It has several sights: for example the group of monuments on the Castle hill, the St. Adalbert Cathedral, the Porta Speciosa, and the Royal palace. The Bakócz-chapel made of red marble was built into the neo-classic Cathedral: with its height of 100 metres it is the highest church of Central Europe.

The marks and characteristics of the Baroque period can also be found in this town: the church of the "water-town" and the presbytery-church in the centre of the town are architectural masterpieces. The historic dwelling-houses of the Széchenyi-square, the neo-classic chapel of the St. Thomas-hill or the narrow streets of the "water-town" all remind the visitors - besides of King Stephen - of Tamás Beckett, Vitéz János, Monteverdi, Bálint Balassi and of Péter Pázmány.

Its museums and collections are rich in relics: the Treasury of the Arch-Cathedral, the Castle museum are known nearly everywhere. The excursion-places of its neighbourhood attract a lot of visitors.

Due to their natural curiosities the Danube-bend and the Pilis National Park are popular destinations of the tourists.

A Duna-kanyar gyöngyszemének is nevezett õsi királyi város területe az õskor óta lakott hely. A népvándorlás korában gyakran cserélt gazdát, a rómaiak idején a Barbaricum határát õrizve volt stratégiai jelentõsége.

Magyarország történelmének különösen jellemzõ városa, hiszen itt született az államalapítóként tisztelt szent királyunk, István, de a város a késõbbiekben is fontos szerepet játszott az ország életében.

Látnivalói felsorolhatatlanok: emlékeztetni kell a várhegyi mûemlékegyüttesre - benne a Szent Adalbert székesegyház, a Porta Speciosa, a Királyi Palota. A vörösmárvány Bakócz-kápolnát, a klasszicista Bazilikába építették be: ez száz méteres magasságával Közép-Európa legnagyobb temploma.

A barokk kor is letette a névjegyét a hangulatos kisvárosban: a vízivárosi templom, a belvárosi plébániatemplom építészeti remekek. A Széchenyi tér mûemlék lakóházaival, a Szent Tamás-hegy klasszicista kápolnájával vagy a viziváros szûk utcái István király mellett Beckett Tamásra, Vitéz Jánosra, Monteverdire, Balassi Bálintra, Pázmány Péterre emlékeztetik az ide látogatót.

Múzeumai, gyûjteményei gazdagok: a Fõszékesegyházi Kincstár, a Vármúzeum, a Keresztény Múzeum messze földön ismertek.

Környékének kirándulóhelyei sok turistát vonzanak a Duna-kanyar és a Pilisi Tájvédelmi Körzet természeti ritkaságai kedvelt úticéllá teszik.
