According to the explanations the origin of its name is in connection with the former nunnery which stood on the confines of the village. Avarian and Roman people lived here - it is proved by the ruins of an ancient earthwork. After the Turkish invasion in the 18th century it was peopled with German settlers on a new place. So today the local geographic names are still bilingual. Its neoclassic catholik church is a historic building. Today about 1650 people live in the village.

Der Name "Leányvár" (Mädchenburg) wird mit dem einist in der Gemarkung der Siedlung gestandenen Nonnenkloster in Vebindung ebracht. Hier wurden Römer und Awaren gesehen, woran auch die Überreste einer eistigen Erdburg errinnern. Nach der Zerstörung durch die Türken siedelten sich im 18. Jahrhundert Deutschen an einem neuen Ort an. Die lokalen geographischen Namen sind noch heute zweisprachig. Historischen Wert hat die klassizistische katholische Kirche. Die Einwohnerzähl beträgt rund 1650.

A település határában állt egykori apácakolostorral hozzák összefüggésbe a nevét. Laktak erre rómaiak és avarok, amire egykori földvár maradványai emlékeztetnek. A török pusztítások után új helyen népesül be a 18. században, németekkel. A helyi földrajzi nevek így ma is kétnyelvûek. Klasszicista katolikus temploma mûemlék jellegû. Lélekszáma 1.650 körül van.
