Tatabánya

Information /  Informationen Információk

The seat of Komárom-Esztergom County is a town artificially united from four villages in 1947. The former Alsógalla and Felsõgalla were of German nationality, Bánhida was a Slovakian and Tatabánya was a Hungarian village. The most important event of its history according to the cronicle of Simon Kézai was that battle where the conquering Árpád defeated the troops of the Moravian Svatoplukh. On the Kõ-hill, the Turul-statue made by Gyula Donáth keeps the memory of this legend (Turul was the mysthical eagle of the ancient Hungarians). This statue is the largest one of its type in Europe.

The modern history of the town of 70,000 inhabitants is built on coal-resources exploited here. Every station of its development is in connection with the coal-industry. The catholic church of Alsógalla was built under the plans of Jakab Fellner, as well as the lately reconstructed Baroque historic monument, the Lapatári-mill.

Tatabánya as a county-seat gives home for several collections: its open-air Mining museum, the Museum of local history, its Exhibition about school-history. The collection of Lajos Boglár etnographer presenting the life of the red-indians, are all worth seeing. The excursion-places of its neighbourhood are very popular.

A négy településbõl 1947-ben mesterségesen egyesített város Komárom-Esztergom megye székhelye. Ma a térség dinamikusan fejlõdõ városa, legjelentõsebb üzeme a SUOFTEC-gyár, a világ legnagyobb keréktárcsagyára. Alsógalla és Bánhida katolikus temploma Fellner Jakab tervei szerint épült, ugyancsak az õ nevéhez fûzõdik a nemrégiben felújított barokk mûemlék, a Lapatári-malom.

Tatabánya mint megyeszékhely számos gyûjteménynek ad otthont: említésre érdemes többek között szabadtéri bányászati múzeuma, helytörténeti múzeuma, iskolatörténeti bemutatója, Boglár Lajos néprajzkutató indián gyûjteménye. Mûvelõdésének egyik központja a Népház, ahol Jászai Mariról elnevezett színháza játszik. Kedveltek a környék kirándulóhelyei.
